I am playr 20204/18/2024 ![]() The game uses both active and inactive elements to limit your path – while the roadblocks are self-explanatory, an old woman defending the street in front of her house with a shotgun is an active control. There are many instances in which you have to sustain damage to either health or stamina to recover an item, and sometimes the item isn't worth it. The game also rewards exploration and daring, placing valuable items in obscure or dangerous locations. While areas have to 'roadblock' the character, limiting your path between objectives, these roadblocks are convincingly constructed and varied. This game takes place 1 year after the disaster, and looking at the makeshift and now abandoned shelters, the picked-over and looted tenements, you believe it. There is a lot of effort put into the look and feel of the environments. This is a game made by smart people, and it shows through play and story. Stylistically, there is a lot to like in this game. Do you think John Romero would have admitted 'Daikatana' wasn't the product he envisioned at its release? I sure don't.įor the record, I'm just reviewing the games 'Survivor' mode I didn't play the standard mode where you get continues and more ammo. ![]() So this is a review of a game that didn't achieve the potential it had even by the admission of the creators. But along comes a game like 'I am Alive', a game that had a lot more people working on it, with a lot more technology at their disposal, and they couldn't finish it the way they wanted. Having recently played 'Fatal Labyrinth', a game cobbled together by probably less than 20 people, with only 2 or 3 doing the majority of the work, I didn't take for granted that they got it done. It amazes me how complicated games, and the process of making games, has become during my lifetime. The second one is called Survivor and offers no retries with save points. In Normal the player gets five retries with each save point before the entire level has to be restarted. The player then has to press a button repeatedly to push the opponent away. There are also skirmishes with melee weapons where different characters are in a standoff. Many enemies only have close combat weapons but outnumber the player, so by quickly switching between a knife, and pulling the gun to scare them off, ammo can be preserved while killing the opponents off one by one while the others are momentarily kept away because of the pulled gun. Another way is through melee combat using a knife for instance. At a distance, it is then possible to switch to a bow and take the enemy out after all while preserving ammo, as arrows can be reused. The character can aim his gun at an opponent to scare him off and get further away. A part of the gameplay is centered around a bluffing system, in tie with the scarce ammo. When using a ranged weapon such as a gun, the game switches to a first-person perspective. Most of the enemies are thugs that roam the streets to gain the upper hand in the environment. Both ammo and health kits are scarce and the player is encouraged to preserve as much as possible. The player has access to an inventory where items, batteries, meds, equipment, and weapons can be stored. ![]() Much of the city is caught in a giant dust cloud that can drain stamina, even to the state of death. During exploration the game is played from a third-person perspective and the character can run, jump, swing from pipes or using a grappling hook, slide, balance while crossing short makeshift bridges, and climb. A part of the game is also spent helping Mei, a small girl that the character has to reunite with her mother. The player guides the protagonist through a desolate urban environment filled with hazards and obstacles as he searches for his wife and kids. Further clues as well as different bonuses can be acquired by helping twenty survivors scattered throughout the city. Much of the story is revealed through self-recorded video journals that are shown as cut-scenes between objectives. It is set in the fictional American city of Haventon. It stars an anonymous male protagonist one year after an unspecified cataclysmic event with a worldwide reach that wiped out most of human civilization and left the remaining cities in ruins. I Am Alive is a post-apocalyptic survival game.
